Govind Wildlife Sanctuary is positioned in the Uttarkashi district of Uttararanchal. It was accepted as a sanctuary on 1st March, 1955. Spreading across an area of 957.969 sq. kms, the sanctuary forms the upper catchments of the Tons River. This river is the most important tributary of River Yamuna in its upper reaches.

Govind Wildlife Sanctuary plays home to several endangered animals. The genetic diversity of the
sanctuary is maintained by the large area and the neighboring contiguous forests. The area is loaded with medicinal plants. Several of these medicinal plants form the basis for certain life saving drugs.
Wildlife in Govind
Wildlife Sanctuary is rich with the presence of more than 15 species of mammals and 150 species of birds exists. The important mammals found here are Snow leopard, Bharal, Himalayan Thar, Black bear, Brown bear, Musk deer, Serow and Common leopard.
Sanctuary has lot to offer in the form of scenic beauty of its area.
Govind Wildlife Park also stands as a site that implements the Snow Leopard Project. This is a project launched by the Govt. of India in order to save the Himalayan Snow Leopards from extinction. To further improve the protection of this rare animal species, the upper reaches (the Snow Leopard habitat) of the
sanctuary are now considered as a
National Park covering an area of 472.08 sq. kms.
Some of the endangered birds found in the area of the sanctuary are Monal pheasant, Koklas pheasant, Himalayan Snow cock, Golden eagle, Steppe eagle, Western Tragopan, Black eagle and Bearded vulture. Other important bird groups of Govind
Wildlife Sanctuary are pigeons, cuckoos, owls, minivets, bulbuls, tits, parakeets, warblers, thrushes, finches, buntings, etc.
There are many Hotels & Resorts located in
Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. Tourist attractions placed in and around the sanctuary are Har-ki-Doon, Ruinsaratal, Deokyara, Kedarkantha and Bhratsar. People visiting the sanctuary also like to see the peaks located here. Some important peaks found here are Black Peak, Swargarohini and Banderpunch.

Climate in the Sanctuary:
Wildlife Sanctuary and its surroundings are blessed with a pleasant weather during the summers. It is in the winters when the climate becomes a little harsh. The temperature of the place usually remains 15 °C during the night and around 25 °C during the day. The entire area of the sanctuary experiences light to heavy snowfall during the winters. The average annual rainfall ranges between 1000 mm to 1500 mm. The rainy season occurs in the month of July and September.
How to Reach Govind National Park
By Air: The nearest airport to the sanctuary is the Jolly Grant Airport, situated at Dehradun.
By Road: Sanctuary is easily reached by road via Rishikesh-Uttarkashi or via Mussoorie- Purola- Saur. Bus services are also available from Uttarkashi, Barkot Dehradun, and Naitwar to Saur-Sankri.
By Rail: The nearest railway station to the sanctuary is in Dehradun, situated at 207 kms.
